Baseball Hall of Famer Willie McCovey believes a letter sent by Joe Morgan to Hall of Fame voters last month was specifically about Barry Bonds.Speaking to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle about Bonds' Hall of Fame case, McCovey cited Morgan's letter as one reason the seven-time National League MVP will struggle to get into Cooperstown."That letter Morgan wrote sure is not going to help Barry," McCovey said. Thomas Jefferson once said "Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom". This is a lesson the 2017 Detroit Tigers took to heart. They knew their window was honestly closing, and sold off aging stars, and spare parts for something Detroit has lacked for a long time, organizational depth. Over the past two drafts and the 2017 trade deadline (both of them), the Tigers added seven of the top ten players on the list below. They've focused heavily on adding arms with front of the rotation upsides, and have succeeded for the most part, plucking a handful of exciting pitching talents. The positional side of things is a little thinner, but there's a small collection of bats with some serious fantasy allure. With the top pick in the upcoming 2018 MLB draft there's a good chance the Tigers add a couple of impact players before this time next year. The future is bright in the Motor City, with a majority of their top talents years away, this could be a system on the ri...

Third base in Atlanta has seen some of the greatest players ever, but the Braves are still searching for stability at the hot corner. The Atlanta Braves have been to the bottom, have stripped their team to its core of Freddie Freeman and Julio Teheran , and bet their entire future on their farm system. A farm system that, even after suffering loss of players after the IFA sanctions handed down by Major League Baseball, is thriving and is still overflowing with talent. The Braves are nearing the end of this long and rocky rebuild as the future stands on the forefront in Atlanta with players like Ozzie Albies , Ronald Acuna, Luiz Gohara and many more ready to push the team back into contention. Now, Braves fans have been spoiled in the past with the team winning and even making the playoffs for an unprecedented 14 straight seasons from 1991 to 2005 so this new territory of losing seasons has been hard. Something Braves fans are even more accustomed to is good play from their third ...

It has been a slow off-season. Weekend Rumblings - News for December 30, 2017 Rustin Dodd writes about the slow off-season and the impact on the Royals. Hosmer still appears to have interest from the San Diego Padres, though recent reports that the club was prepared to offer a six-year, $120 million contract were based on incorrect interpretations of earlier reports from ESPN’s Buster Olney. For now, the market has been so slow that even idle chatter from the winter meetings can be dissected and ground to a nub. In some ways, of course, the slow nature of the offseason could buoy the Royals’ hopes to re-sign Hosmer. Two years ago, the club waited out free agent Alex Gordon and came to terms with him in early January. Yet the current offseason offers some uncertainty. The latest on Eric Hosmer. For those worried the Padres are taking shortcuts again: They could head to spring training without signing a starting pitcher to a major league deal. They would very much like to sign...

NFL Picks: Week 17

The fellas chime in for the final week of the NFL regular season. If I was allowed a tagline for Week 17 it would be “comedy of errors.” The last week of the regular season feels like a preseason dress rehearsal, as many teams are electing to get a closer look at their backup quarterbacks. Others, like the Steelers , are being coy about their plans. Add it all up, and navigating the Week 17 waters is an exercise in information overload. The more you know about playing time this week, the better off you will be. In theory. Major shouts are in order for Paddi Cooper, who leads our pack in winning percentage by a large margin. Also, shouts to the three of us who crested the 60% threshold after last week’s dominance, putting a whopping six of us over that mark for the season (joining Paddi, Ghoji, and Pete). Here are the updated standings: That is one fantastic percentage by Paddi. May we all emulate his awesomeness in the future. Unanimous picks for this week: WAS, NE, SEA, NO, B...

He has a 3.65 PR over the last month, which is good for 100th best ( Austin Rivers is 99th and 42% owned; Carmelo Anthony, 98.4% ownership, and Ricky Rubio, 72.5%, are 125th and 126th, respectively). The 7 Baseball Movies You Have To See

We’ll be traveling over some familiar ground here. However, younger fans might not know all the baseball movies listed below. Classic Baseball Movies Maybe they’ve heard their dad talking about them. Or heard older family members debate their merits around the dinner table. But now is a chance to see them for yourself. Or, for the older fans, a chance to view them again. These are listed in no particular order. That’s because, honestly, we can’t separate them one from another. They are all great in their own way. Field of Dreams Yes, it’s a hippie, dippy kind of film. But if there is a better movie about fathers and sons, we haven’t seen it. Kevin Costner plays Ray, a man told by a disembodied voice to build a baseball diamond in his corn field in Iowa. If that sounds like a good start to a memorable fable, that’s because it is. The subplot about Moonlight Graham is almost as good as the main plot. You’ll cry by the end unless you are made of stone. Bull Durham Here’s the one t...

by Eric Stashin (aka The Rotoprofessor) We’ve long heard the hype about the Pirates’ Tyler Glasnow, but he hasn’t been able to take that talent and have it translate to success in the Majors. Everyone always points to his control as the reason for his struggles, and while that’s part of the issue it takes more to bring in a 7.69 ERA over 62.0 IP in the Majors: 13 K/9 6.39 BB/9 1.89 HR/9 .358 BABIP 7% strand rate Obviously part of the issue was luck based, especially considering his 20.6% line drive rate. All he’d have to do is maintain that rate and we should see improved numbers in both his BABIP and strand rate. The other issues, though? Strikeouts His history tells one story, including a 13.50 K/9 at Triple-A last season. However his 8.2% SwStr% and 25.0% O-Swing% support the rather pedestrian mark that he posted in ’17. Those numbers would make us question his actual stuff, though there was a clear change in pitch selection from his f...

Not too long ago the words "Chicago Cubs Prospects" meant something. It was a system deep with talented positional players with premium fantasy upsides. In recent years those talented positional payers have debuted on the big stage, succeeded (for the most part), and broke an 108 year old curse. So to say things are good in Wrigleyville is an understatement. So while the farm is not what it was two years ago, it's been essential in reinforcing both of the Cubs recent playoff runs. This leaves Lance and myself to pick up the pieces of what remains. It's a system lacking standout talent, but one that's deep with mid-rotation starters, fringe positional players, and middle relief types. We go through the high points in Jose Albertos, Adbert Alzolay, and Aramis Ademan. Then cover some of the recent draftees, and scour the system for upside. Not the most exciting collection of talent we'll cover, but there's a few names to watch for. Finally, please make sure t...

Just on the Mariners alone, I could say Ryon Healy is a sleeper, and some people might agree. Mitch Haniger has been a sleeper for about three years. Maybe some would even consider Mike Zunino a sleeper. Ben Gamel though? He's not going to be drafted even in deep mixed leagues. He's a sleeper who fantasy baseball 'perts won't even talk about, but if you mention him they'll be like, "Oh, yeah, he's a good sleeper." So, why not talk about him? 2018 Fantasy Baseball Mock Draft Observations Now that Fantasy Football is winding down, it’s time to turn your attention to 2018 Fantasy Baseball. You have undoubtedly been paying attention to the few trades and free agent signings that have taken place up until now, but you should also start to think about player valuations and your draft preparations. There are projections available in several places and it won’t be long before rankings for 2018 Fantasy Baseball are published. I’ve already participated in two Fantasy Baseball mock drafts with two completely different groups of Fantasy Baseball analysts and writers. The majority of the discussion here will be about the Dec 27 mock draft. The draft results are available in an Excel spreadsheet that you can download by clicking here. Aside from the participants (I am the only one ...
